Buttock Lift/Augmentation

Since the beginning of time, the buttocks have always been one of the two most important determinants of the beauty of the female torso. Until now, those who have flat buttocks have had no real options for having rounder, more desirable buttocks. Those whose buttocks are larger than desired or poorly shaped have just had to live with it. Now for the first time there are true options to surgically augment the buttocks and/or contour the buttocks to allow men and women develop, enhance and shape their buttocks!

The ideal shape, volume and position of the buttocks are an indicator of youthfulness and beauty. Flattening and sagging of the buttocks can create an aged appearance. Like the rest of the body, the buttock changes over time. With significant weight loss and aging, the buttocks can lose volume and tone. Buttock enhancement procedures are designed to rejuvenate the position, volume and contour of the buttocks. You may benefit from buttock enhancement surgery if:

  • You wish for enhanced buttock volume with a more youthful shape and improved projection
  • You have lost a substantial amount of weight and have flattening of the buttocks
  • You have skin laxity and sagging of your buttock tissues

There are a variety of buttocks enhancement procedures available to treat these problems.

What is a Brazilian buttock lift (fat grafting)?

The newly sensationalized "Brazilian Butt Lift" is not truly a buttock lift procedure but more an augmentation which appears to have lifted the buttock by actually augmenting it and increasing its projection. Patients with youthful buttock skin tone who desire improved buttock volume, shape and projection may be good candidates for the Brazilian buttock lift. This procedure involves a comprehensive liposuction procedure to gather body fat which is then processed and grafted into portions of the buttocks to improve roundness, shape and projection. The technique is individualized, as the pattern of buttock volume deficiency is unique to each patient.

The Brazilian buttock lift is a fat grafting procedure that is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Fat grafting uses excess fat from other areas of the body, which act as donor sites. Those sites include the abdomen, hips, back or thighs to add shape to the buttocks. The fat cells are delicately removed with a gentle liposuction technique, and after those fat cells are processed, the fat is injected into different layers of the buttocks. Fat cells are sensitive and require careful and meticulous handling by a surgeon who is experienced in buttock augmentation. The fat must be placed strategically through tunnels in layers for a smooth and natural look.

Patients are asked not to sit for longer than 20 minutes and to sleep on their belly for couple of weeks after the surgery. After this time period normal sitting and sleeping positions can be resumed. Patients can return to work comfortably within 7-10 days. Patients can return to exercise as soon as they feel comfortable, but a six-week wait is preferred.

What are the risks & side effects of fat injection?

In practice, the following side effects happen quite rarely and you physicians will exam you thoroughly to minimize the Fat Injection risks and avoid the side effects:

  • Swelling and discoloration
  • Bleeding and hematoma
  • Seroma build up, early and late
  • Infection and/or abscess
  • Dehiscence (wound break-down) and implant exposure
  • Bad scars
  • Pain (early, late, neuroma) or transient sciatic pain

Buttock Lift

The buttock lift procedure is a component of a lower body lift that addresses circumferential lower body laxity as a result of weight loss or aging. It can also be done to improve the contour of the flanks, thighs and buttocks after a previous tummy tuck procedure. Sagging excess skin is removed and the remaining buttock tissues are repositioned into a more youthful appearance. Using your own tissues, a special auto-augmentation flap technique can be done to improve the volume and projection of the buttocks.

Typical buttock-lift patients have experienced substantial weight loss through diet, exercise or bariatric (gastric banding and bypass) surgery. The procedure is done under a general anesthetic and is an outpatient procedure. Patients typically take 10-14 days to recover and return to work. Patients can return to exercise as soon as they feel comfortable. Dr. Movagharnia specializes in breast and body cosmetic surgery and is one of the few board-certified plastic surgeons in the Atlanta area offering these advanced body contouring procedures.

Buttock augmentation with buttock implants

This procedure involves the surgical insertion of artificial implants in between the gluteus muscles in order to enhance their size and shape. This surgery is also frequently sought by men and women who are unhappy with the size of their buttocks. Some feel their buttocks lack shape, while others want to have a more attractive behind by making them larger and rounder.

The buttock can be augmented with a silicone implant to improve shape, volume and projection. These implants are placed through an incision within the gluteal cleft. The procedure is done under general anesthesia. Like all procedures that use implants, problems can develop with implant infection and changes in implant position. Because of the use of standardized implants, buttock augmentation with implants cannot be precisely tailored for each individual.

Alternatives to buttock implants, such as the Brazilian buttock lift, use one's own fat to contour and shape the buttocks in a more precise manner and avoid the use of an artificial implant.

Liposculpture of the buttocks

There are a variety of cosmetic surgery procedures available to those who would like to have more youthful, fuller, and perky buttocks with a more sensual body profile. The procedure for buttock augmentation and enhancement specifically varies depending on what is the actual deficiency and what is missing. There are many who are either genetically or by weight gain have developed "fat and wide" buttocks. Liposculpture can help these people by shaping their buttocks and the surrounding tissues to make the buttocks rounder and more proportional to the rest of the figure.
